Engage - February 2007 Edition

Introduction

Welcome to the February 2007 edition of Engage

In this month’s issue we focus on two interesting reports that reflect on the year that was and make some predictions for 2007.

We feature an interesting research report from Zapthink - The SOA Forecast for 2007, which includes a review of Zapthink’s 2006 predictions, and suggests that 2007 will be a particularly important year for Enterprise IT transformation in the U.S.

McKinsey’s January 2007 survey of CIO Agendas in 2007 offers some invaluable insights into CIO attitudes to key issues and explores their priorities for the year ahead.

The CIO Magazine article highlights a critical issue facing today’s Enterprise - when it comes to the management of programs driving business process improvement, should Business or IT take ownership?

We would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the conclusions of these reports and also about the pressing business or IT challenges that you or your organization face.  Our ‘Ask the Expert’ panel will provide expert opinion and advice on your comments in future issues of Engage.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Engage – we look forward to hearing what you think about the content and of any topics you would like us to address in the future.

Best regards,

Loek van den Boog

The SOA forecast for 2007

ZapThink has seen SOA take off even more aggressively than we anticipated at the beginning of 2006, and all indications show that SOA strength will be further reinforced and expanded in 2007 to many corners of the IT environment, throughout the world and in many different industries. And so, during this season of sultry winter weather and competition, it is time to evaluate our predictions from the previous year and forecast the architectural and competitive climate for SOA in 2007.

What's on  CIO agendas  in 2007: A McKinsey Survey

McKinsey's October 2006 survey of senior IT executives shows a growing interest in service-oriented architectures and lean data center operations.

Service-oriented architectures, which improve communication and integration between IT systems regardless of their underlying technologies, are a response to the widespread adoption of global Web services standards.

IT departments usually try a technology internally for several years before implementing it in systems that communicate with other organizations. But nearly half of all survey respondents are eager to try service-oriented architectures in outward-facing systems.
